A Slice of Paradise Off Florida’s Coast
Nestled in the sparkling waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon, just off the coast of Palm Beach, Peanut Island is a hidden gem that blends crystal-clear waters, fascinating history, and endless outdoor adventure. This tiny 80-acre island is proof that size doesn’t matter when it comes to making an unforgettable experience.
From snorkeling vibrant reefs and paddleboarding across calm waters to stumbling upon a Cold War-era bunker, Peanut Island offers a mix of thrill, beauty, and history that keeps you coming back. My recent trip had it all—sun-soaked exploration, breathtaking marine encounters, and even a glimpse into presidential secrecy.
Getting to Peanut Island: Paddle or Ferry? 🚣♂️🛥️
There are two ways to reach Peanut Island:
A short ferry ride from Riviera Beach Marina (for those who prefer convenience).
Paddleboarding or kayaking across the lagoon (for those craving adventure).
We chose the paddleboard route, launching from Phil Foster Park. The water here was pristine and calm, making it an easy and scenic journey. With every stroke, I could see schools of fish darting beneath my board, and the island grew larger in the distance, surrounded by its inviting, shallow turquoise waters.
Snorkeling in Peanut Island’s Crystal-Clear Waters 🤿
If you love snorkeling, Peanut Island is an absolute paradise. Unlike Biscayne National Park, where the water takes on a darker, mangrove-fed hue, here, the visibility is stunningly clear, allowing for an up-close view of Florida’s diverse marine life.
The moment I dipped beneath the surface, I found myself completely surrounded by vibrant sea creatures:

✔ Barracudas lurking in the distance, eyeing everything with curiosity

The reefs are alive and thriving, providing some of the best snorkeling I’ve experienced in Florida. Floating effortlessly above the corals, I lost track of time, mesmerized by the underwater world that unfolded before me.
Exploring the Park: Trails, Bunkers & Hidden History 🔍
Beyond the water, Peanut Island has plenty to explore on land. The island is wrapped in a scenic walking trail, offering stunning waterfront views and shaded picnic areas that make for the perfect mid-day break. But the biggest surprise? A Cold War-era bunker hiding in plain sight.
Built in 1961 as a top-secret fallout shelter for President John F. Kennedy, this hidden bunker is a must-visit for history buffs. Though now non-operational, it’s an eerie and fascinating reminder of a time when nuclear war was a real concern. Walking through its steel doors, I imagined the tension of that era and the preparations made for a crisis that (thankfully) never came.
